My dears,

I don't know that site until my dear Lark tell me about it,the site have most
of Avro aircraft;


But I have two objections on that site;

first no reason for not use the type-505 and 507.
second the type-785 to 799 were used actaully,because all of us know that Avro type-791
was a project of Shackleton aircraft,fitted with four Napier Nomad diesel engines.

The Avro-550 was used a recce project for the Spec. 37/22.
 
The AVRO 784 was the last type number issued under the Avro name.
Subsequent projects from the same design office were allocated Hawker Siddeley (H.S.) designations.

505 : type number not used.
507 : designation allocated to a set of mainplanes built for a Mr Leight in July 1913.
550 : 3 seat reconnnaissance project Spec.37/22
or a 15 passenger European civil transport with 3 Rolls Royce Condors to Spec 40/22

The designation '791' used in the Aeroplane , January 1999 article
is a misprint or error.
It must be Avro 719 for the projected Shackleton Mk.IV with four Napier Nomads.

The Avro heritage site gives other info for 719 but the two sources I mentioned
before confirm the relation 719-Shackleton-Nomad.

Apophenia's list mentions several designations as "NOT USED".

However, apart from the Type 505 which indeed appears as "NOT USED" in my list, I DO have information for all the others:
  • 507: set of mainplanes built for a Mr. Leigh in July 1913
  • 550 (1): Avro Triplane, also known as the Avro Four three-seat triplane fleet recce project (1922)
  • 550 (2): designation reused for a 15-passenger European transport project with three Rolls-Royce Condor engines (also in 1922)
  • 777: I have this as reserved for an “special project”, but not used... Info, anyone?
Apart from 777, the list in now complete from Type 500 to Type 784.

malipa: Are you asking where the Lancasters were built? If so, most were built at the Avro Ltd Aircraft Plant, Chadderton or Avro Ltd Aircraft Plant, Woodford Aerodrome (both near Manchester). But the Lancaster was also built by 'shadow factories' throughout the UK and at Victory Aircraft in Canada.
 
Mostly aluminum alloys, with some steel in the engines, landing gear, and high strength parts. Also some plastic in the transparencies and the H2S fairing.
 
I didn't know that they already used aluminum on that big scale in the 1940's...

Avro had a long history of wooden construction, so no surprise that the Lancaster also had a number of wood components ... including: parts of the outboard nacelles, Wing tips, and horizontal tailplane; frames for the elevators, tail fin leading edges, aft cockpit glazing, escape hatches, and entry door; aileron trim tabs, and tail turret deflectors; and a host of interior door, panels, mounting brackets, etc.

A Frenchman built a mostly aluminum airplane in 1910, but it was not practical. Thin sheets were not available, and forming techniques were very limited. The result was a fairly high empty weight.

By the early 1930s thin skin aluminum production was cutting-edge technology, at least in the US. Look at the early Northrop monoplanes, the Hughes R-1, etc. This lead to refinement of manufacturing techniques of both the flat sheet and forming of parts, and by the mid 1930s you had the DC-2, Boeing 247 and similar with largely aluminum structure. By the time the Manchester/Lancaster rolled around, aluminum structure was state-of-the-art. I think a similar progression occurred in Europe and Japan, maybe somebody else can give dates and names.

And it wasn't just Avro that loved wooden bits. The Canberra had a plywood rudder, I seem to recall. ;D

Avro 805A: Version powered by four General Electric T64 turboprop engines, with downdraft air flaps and a straight cruciform empennage.
Avro 805B: Version powered by four Rolls-Royce RB162 lift engines plus four Rolls-Royce Spey RB.163 Mk512 for propulsion, fitted with lift-enhancing flaps and a skewed drift.
Avro 805C: Version powered by four Rolls-Royce RB162 lift turbofans plus four Rolls-Royce Spey RB.163 for propulsion, fitted with blown flaps and a skewed drift.

Avro 807-01: Business and VIP version, never built.
Avro 807-02: Search and rescue version, never built.
Avro 807-03: Ground attack version, never built.

Avro 837: Project of an ADAV military aircraft equipped with a jib drift and two pairs of wings, one at the front and the other at the rear, equipped at their ends with keel blowers which rock according to the phases vertical and hovering, or horizontal.
Avro 837A: Military gyrodyne project powered by two reactors under the wings, equipped with a propeller,a fin with an anti-torque propeller at its top and a loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage.
Avro 837B: Military gyrodyne project powered by two reactors under the wings, equipped with a lift rotor,a fin with an anti-torque propeller at its top, a loading ramp at the rear and a fuselage which is larger than the 837A.
