Am I right in thinking that the intake for the front engine faces _backwards_?

Found an interesting article on the Yak-24K presidential VIP variant, but the text in it won't let itself be copied properly into Google Translation, so I've only been able to translate the captions. Thought the pics were interesting though, despite the lousy quality...

Was the Yak-24K the same as what we called the Yak-24P earlier in this topic? Or were they two distinct VIP versions?

here is a strange Yakovlev Project developed from Yak-24 as a super heavy lift helicopter,
it was V-38 ?.

Usually I would use this opportunity to correct as this is better known as the Yak-60, but this designation is purely theoretical based on the number 60 painted on a display model. It was also called Yak-32 by another source. Could V-38 be the correct one, or is it any of the previous ones? I look forward to a day when it can be proven for sure.

How could they use the "V-" prefix on this one, since that was normally used by Mil?

you are right,that's a mystery,I will send to you the book to check.
 
Two possible explanations for aft-pointing engine intakes.

First, it might be structurally expedient to mount engines on the backside of the forward transmission. ... instead of cantilevering them out over the windshield.

Secondly: an aft-facing inlet ingests half as much foreign object debris (e.g. ice shedding off the windshield.)

As far as I can tell the "V" prefix is a Soviet standard designation for certain projects and early development types. Kamov used it as well.

'V' usually stood for 'Vertolyot' ie helicopter.

In my files,

a little know variant,called Yak-24-2,had a more than takeoff grosser weight,does anyone hear about it before ?.
 
Just been reading about Yak-24 'Nerpa' (just to add to the confusion :eek:)


The source I was reading stating
"the helicopter pipelay Yak-24 "Nerpa", created for the construction of a field pipeline PMT-100 for fuel supply to places of deployment of military equipment through impassable for wheeled and tracked vehicles land areas. The sides of the machine serial (serial number 03310) were four tapes in which could be up to 88 tubes (average weight of 30.5 kg of pipe). Take-off weight of the helicopter at all it reached 14 900 kg.

The layout was performed in automatic mode along the chosen route. Before layout (40-50 meters to begin with) from a helicopter dumped "cat" with a rope length of 600-650 m, the rotating drum. Unwinding, twisted rope pulley defining a reset pipe and started to work Putney pointer speed. Planned and emergency discharge pipe without the introduction of "Cats."
During the tests, carried out 49 missions and 159 discharge pipe. During one flight Yak-24 was putting the thread pipeline length 528 meters. Municipal tests pipelay ended March 31, 1958. Leading the testing engineer were SH Atabekyan and test pilot, KD Tayurskiy.

Tests have shown the practical suitability of the Yak-24 for this purpose, with the option to pipe layer could convert at least some production helicopter. Automatic layout of pipes was carried out at heights of 8 to 40 m.

After the test, the helicopter returned to the factory and was converted into a tanker (the theme "Ray"), for this in the cargo cabin has three 1,060-liter tank, or up to 10 200-liter barrels, or 99 20-liter jerry cans. Filling up to 4 sites of equipment could be fit with a four neck and hover with 1st sleeve. Municipal tests (lead — AM Zagordan engineer and test pilot Tayurskiy KD), held from 24 May to 26 June 1958, showed that the strength of the helicopter was in store for the missing perform similar operations, and the question of the adoption of a as tanker and pipelay had to venture after the military trials of Yak-24."

In my files,

and before the company developed VD-24 in 1952,there was an early
project for tandem helicopter project of 1951,later let to appear the
Yak-24.
