The missing link between the XF-90 and F-104 was the L-205. I don't know much about this aircraft
- dorsal air intake
- mach 2
- 20 tons (that's why it's successor the F-104 was the 1st LWF)
- tail similar to the XF-90
- study closed at the end of the Korean war.
Any drawing of this project ?
 
Most likely one of the missing links between the F-90 and the F-104. Lockheed's LRI-X entries also fall into this evolutionary thread.
 
There is a 3-view in the appendix of Miller's Skunk Works.
 
Someone is faster ;) I only hope that it is the right picture, because I found it not in appendix, but at the beginning of chapter 5.

PS: I have a lot of pre-F104 studies, but not any available time now, so I will scan and post them sometime during weekend.

Actually, the appendix is of Francillon's "Lockeed's aircrafts since 1913"... BUT, it has a nice description... ;) 8)

The J-53 engine... :) I heard it developed around 17 000 Ibs
(8000 kgp) of thrust in 1951-53 but was too big and abandoned (Le Fana de l'Aviation, la deuxième génération jets)
Nice to see a fighter project with this engine :p
 
GOT IT. ;D As soon as I can, I'll get the picture scanned. There's a 3-view in Putnam's(?) book on Lockheed aircraft. It's also refered to as the Model 99.
And a reply for elmayerle, if you're refering to Jay Miller's 'Skunk Works...Offical History', no, the L-205 is not pictured. They skipped the -205 and only showed the -204 and -206. I have that book and checked three times.

Okay, so? It was late and I had the picture with me. So, why not? At least it gave me a good idea of how my scans turn out. Practice, practice, practice.... ::)
 
The nose is already F-104 :D Now, change the position of the air intake, shrink the whole aircraft and you obtain "the missile with the man in it"

Not directly. Fight global shows the Starfighter evolution
as a light weight air superiorty fighter wile the
L-205 was Lockheeds answer to an Air Force ,September 1950, request
for an all-weather interceptor...
 
Actually for a missile-armed interceptor (late 1950), an RFP cancelled in 1951 (Bill Slayton dixit...), which is not the same as the famous "1954 interceptor"... Another possible tender for the missile-armed interceptor is the V-374, an USAF derivative of the F7U-3.
