A c. 1960s experimental hypersonic aircraft model, developed jointly by the United States Air Force and North American Aviation (NAA). The model features a wooden exterior that has been painted black with "U.S. Air Force," "USAF," and "North American Aviation, Inc. / Space and Information Systems Division" in white along the fuselage and vertical stabilizer. There is additional text indicating the placement of vents and exhaust. The model divides along the transverse to reveal interior metal engine and intake components.
NAA was a major aerospace manufacturer instrumental in the creation of many historic air and spacecraft, including the X-15 rocket plane. In 1967, NAA merged with Rockwell-Standard, going through a number of further mergers until its acquisition by Boeing in 1996.
