BELL *All Wing* helicopter project dated 1954!
From: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1954/1954%20-%201943.html?search=Bell
The text mentioned: "The prototype is now being built" ???
It seems related with the D-218 cargo helicopter project.
http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1222.msg24342/highlight,bell+d-218.html#msg24342

Hmmm, I just came across this one and the linked posts, what an interesting design. I wonder if the lifting fuselage would provide enough lift in forward flight to offload the rotors? It probably wouldn't increase speed very much (look how thick the wing is) but it might increase efficiency at modest speed.

The "wingspan" would be problematic for maneuvering, but it's also not hard to imagine it as a very effective assault transport. Big clamshell doors open forward and 50 troopers run out or maybe four light vehicles with four troops each drive out, simultaneously, and the transport is away again in seconds.

Does anyone know of any other "flying wing" or "lifting body" helicopter designs?

Barrington Bond,

That looks a lot like Bell'S Hypersonic Transport design...

I suspect this to be depicting the Bell D-400A as seen in this diagram published in page 2:

Nice find, the D-133. I had it listed as a fixed-wing version of the X-5 but hadn't seen a picture before.

Hi,

(I'm sorry but why did you leave Russian in your English? The word "mozhnonayti" means "can be found"!)

The D261 was a 1964 two-seater attack helicopter proposal for the AAFSS contest (which was won by the AH-56 Cheyenne).

Thank you misunderstood me, I translate in -line translator

interesting model where you can still see the images D-261

Bell Model D-261 Double combat helicopter project, it is not clear how you can sit in the front cabin, it is very small for the pilot.

Pretty interesting summary of the X-5 program here; http://documents.theblackvault.com/documents/aviation/XPlanes/BellX5.pdf

Some of the more notable bits;

Bell was very serious about putting the XJ-46 in the plane, and also looked at adding booster rockets to the X-5. First twin 1500lbs, and by July 51 rockets with 4000lbs of thrust were looked at, with a projected speed of m1.4 at 40000ft. The Sapphire was also looked at. There is also a mention that douglas was interested in similar rocket boosters for the x-3.

Early in 48 Bell began looking at VG aircraft. In August of that year they were loaned the P1101. Bell proposed building 24 interceptor airplanes of their VG design, and for a time the Air Force was interested until the AMC killed the idea. They then proposed two research vg planes be built.

Prior to the X-5 program Woods designed a low-level, twin engine, swing wing attack plane. This design did not have the wings shift for and aft but instead used fuel transfer to shift the cg as the sweep changed.

Woods envisioned the X-5 tactical derivative as having an intake screen that doubled as a radar antenna and the dive brakes could be used as mounting points for rato.

General Saville visited Bell in July 50 and asked Bell for projected data of a fighter X-5 with different engines, but Wright Field was skeptical and shot the idea down.

In July 51, the issue of creating an X-5 fighter derivative was brought up again. This time Colonel Victor R. Haugen saw the X-5 as being roughly in line with fighter studies then under way and asked the Weapons Systems Division for an analysis. There summary was that a virtually complete redesign would be needed to turn it into a fighter.

Thanks ... great stuff Mark! Interesting to see Bell working their Air Cushion Landing System concept :)

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if these retractable air cushion designs were actual projects or just speculative artwork?

If I am not mistaken Bell did test the air cushion concept on a seconded DHC-7 from the Army in the early 70's.
