I think the "91" designation is a mistake. Not only the phrase "basic trainer" was not used until the latter half of the 1930s, but at the time of the Model 90s series, there were no low-wing trainers at Boeing yet!

There was, however, a Stearman (later Boeing-Wichita) Model X-90 modified as X-91 and it was exactly what you described!

What you're describing corresponds to Model 390 too, so this adds to the idea that Model 399 was related to 390/391/396. We'd need diagrams of all three now for confirmation that "399" is not a typo of some sort. Model 390 looked like this (picture attached).

Hi All!

Model 225---pre-P-26 monoplane fighter project
Model 258---3-engine transport proposal, high-wing
Model 276---Brazilian F4B-3
Model 374---similar specification of the Grumman F7F, 2 x Wright R-1820 engine
Model 381---pre-XB-36 competition
Model 458---competitor of the XP-92
Model 482---USN "penetration" fighter, OS-112
Model 483---big jet bomber

Great additions, nugo, thanks!

To be on the safe side, I prefered not to add your "Model 276" to the list as the Brazilian F4B-3s were designated Model 256 and Model 267. As these airframes are pretty well documented, I assume this "276" results from a typo somewhere, unless of course you can provide us with a reliable source that clearly documents the existence of both models.

Thanks again!

Hi else Stargazer2006!

Yes you are right!
I just do not think about the typos.
I am from this book ( "The story of the Boeing Company", by Bill Yenne, page: 17 ) has the information
and there, as the species, the typo (or a error), (Model 276 should be Model 267).
I also found here; my mistake:
Model 258---3-engine transport proposal, high-wing
Model 258 should be Model 238---All-metal passenger transport (Three P.& W. Hornet engines(550 hp))
Source: Boeing Aircraft Since 1916 (Publication Year-1989), by Peter M. Bowers, page: 563 and Index I
Boeing Aircraft by Model number (... 238, 563 (page)

and there is an error (Boeing Model 258--3-engine transport proposal, high-wing, should be Model 238)

Model 208---5-seat Navy flying-boat in 1929 to use wings of the Model 80 trimotor transport (Two
P. & W. Hornet engines (525 hp)
Model 330---4-engine bomber
(Source: http://www.fighter-planes.com/info/b29.htm)

Mistakes can happen, and do happen. Don't worry.
As an aircraft designation maniac since the tender age of 6, I have always strived to cross-compare and verify my designations because I was taught early on that even good books can have typos... and even authors can make mistakes...

So now that we know 276 is indeed 267 and 258 is in fact 238, we are left with your newest addition : Model 208. Great ! I'm just wary of one thing: I have a Model 209 in my list which was meant to be the Navy's projected XP2B-1 patrol boat. Could it be the same project, and therefore yet another typo? Or two distinct projects for the same proposal?

Boeing's Model 73 was a small transport project called the Jaybird. It appears in sketch form in one of my Boeing books I think.

Finally, a picture of the Jaybird (from the Putnam book):

Allow me to answer my own question... The Putnam book presents a three-view plan of the Model 208, which is indeed a distinct project:

I've just upgraded the list above with the various additions I found, mostly by exploring this forum...

Nugo's initial post mentions the Model 57 as another PW-9 variant. Any information on that one, or is it a typo? Thanks for your help.

Thanks to you all for the updates.

Those models from the forum that I failed to list did NOT appear in my searches. In most cases the model numbers do not appear in the thread's title or even in the text of the posts, just in the enclosed pictures!

Model 280---proposal, upgraded the Model 247, 12 to 14 passengers, 2 P&W Hornet (700 hp to each)

Hmm...what about an idea to ask BCA guys (girls, in fact)? I'd do something like this, at least they exactly know who knows.

Great info, thanks! Do you have a source for this?

I've been reorganizing my Boeing data over the past couple of days and managed to find a few more designations for the list.

Here is what I have in the 500+ range. I've only featured the basic designation, not the subtypes. Of course any correction and addition is most welcome:

Some Model numbers in the 500-1000 range that I have...

540 gas turbine engine (turboprop)
