Torpedo bomber K-13M (Морской) = morskoy/seaplane
Twin-engined medium bomber K-13 / СБ = skorostnoy/high-speed, fast bomber
K-14/1 passenger (12+2) version
K-14/2 all-metal variants K-12, with engine M-85 (2 x 825h/p)
K-16 / BC , VS bomber-reconnaissance project of 1936
K-17 heavy tailless, fast long-range bomber built on principle "flying wing" and was shown by the present prototype modern strategic bomber.
The Plane was designed in two variants: four and twin - engined.
Range flight with thrown by cargo 4000кg (the normal bomb load) – 8 000 km and before 7000км in overloaded variant (6000 kg), without bombs range flight increased before 10400км!
If meaning Kalinin’s have were able be realized then USSR had already to 1940 unique long-range bombers - "flying fortress".
In KB-29 Grokhovskiy were conducted like work on improvement TB-3 in variant "flying wing".
(Were and other joint high-altitude projects , stratostat by Grokhovskiy + K-15 rocket plane with delta wing)
It is arrested on false accusation (fraudulent charge of conspiracy and spying) NKVD and October 22, 1938 executed.

Hi Borovik,

as usual, incredible stuff. The "Tsar Ptitsa" in it`s many variants. Makes me day dream. The K-15 is realised in kit form by Igor Shestakov`s Unicraft Models. Take a look at this magnificent project: http://www.geocities.com/unicraftmodels/on/k15/k15.htm
Thank you very much Borovik, for sharing this.

K-15 really futuristic and undervalued project, deserving separate topic. Long before Lippish and brother Horten , for the first time in the world and exactly in USSR offered delta wing (the Project SAM-4 "Sigma" Moskalev’s had rather ogival form.)
No, first in the world was Leonardo da Vinchi. :)

Thank you my dear Borovik,

but is the Kalinin K-8 a fighter or recce aircraft ?.

Officially project was qualified as postal plane.
K.Kalinin seen its plane multi-role aircraft.
Fighters never not designed.
but is the Kalinin K-8 a fighter or recce aircraft ?.

Hi borovik,

can you show us the Kalinin K.6 in the same way? ::)

Servus and Thanks Maveric

In 1928 , Kalinin prepares the draft K-6 under development in two variants postal and bombing... On designs K-6 was a development to models K-4 with multiple element installed on plane K-5 that simplified the building of the plane.

A couple of not mentioned yet light planes created by Kalinin:

K-9 (first flight 11.1930, first photo) and K-10 (first flight 05.1931, all images except the first one), only prototypes have built and tested.

K-9 was equipped by Walter engine (60 HP), K-10 by more powerful Schwetsov M-11 (100 HP)

Do the folding wings in K9 and K 10 indicate that there were plans to use them on aircraft carriers?

Folding wings were pretty common on pre-war European light aircraft. The folding tailplane of the K-9 on the other hand ... !

Agree with Apophenia
None aircraft carriers. This reduced the size of the plane on range before 2,8м and allowed to carry it, not taking , on flat-cars and keep in small lodgement.
If to screw up one’s eyes, :) then K-10 can looks like Japanese naval carrier dive-bomber Aichi type 99 D3A “Val”.
That is found under K-10 not bomb rack/hard-point, facility for pollination in agricultures.

Hi,

in the Osprey Encyclopdia of Russian Aircraft book, the K-11 was mentioned
at the first of book as tailless glider, and at the Addendum,it was project of
1933 as utility transport aircraft with high wing and powered by one pusher
engine and had a twin boom configuration, who we can believe ?.

Information on p.135 pertains to K-12(the glider). See more objective info about K-11 at the Addendum, p.523.
Besides:
"Kalinin couldn't finish these K-11 works which began in 1933. It was expected to be twin-engined passenger plane having elliptic wing and two fuselages." (V.Savin, Planet "Konstantine", p.190)
Similar like to two-set K-5.
There was also another version of the K-11 preliminary (sketch) project, undersized and single-engined (pusher).

There is real prototype on these photos, not the mock-up. The mock-up looked much different, as you can see.

There are only two known photos of the mock-up: one posted by borovik, the other posted by me yesterday.

Until we have enough material to justify a separate topic (which I certainly hope for) here is a photo of the wind-tunnel model of the K-15.

Full text in German reads:

"The K-15 was tested as a wind-tunnel model while the DM-1 was built in full scale. Lippisch may have been stimulated by Kalinin's design for his construction. The Kalinin operation was occupied by German troops in 1941... "

Unfortunately not... Thanks for the interesting compared views.

I read somewhere that serie-production of the Kalinin K-12 twin engine bomber was launched in the Factory n°207, close to Moscow (where exactely?), with 10 production aircraft ordered.
Is there any photos existing of this production line, or how was the construction status of those 10 examplaries when Kalinin was arrested by the NKVD and the program stopped?

Thanks in advance

The information is correct (and confirmed in these sources: V.Savin "Planeta" Konstantin "(1994 Khar'kov" OSNOVA ") D.SOBOLEV" Centennial history of flying wings "(1978 Rusavia))
Factory №207 located in Moscow suburban town Dolgoprudny.
Construction of ten series K-12, begun in 1938, shortly after the laying of the pile in the first aircraft was discontinued leadership GUAP (General Directorate of Aviation Industry).

Re: Kalinin prototypes and projects (early K-12 control surfaces??)

I am pretty confused about the wing control surfaces. From google's translation of the russian from airwar.ru it sounds like the junkers type surfaces are the elevons whilst the controls attached to the wings seem to be the flaps.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

index.php

The red parts are ailerons. The blue parts are elevators.

The yellow parts are deflectable part of the wing, which could be swiveled by the pilot on angle from +3 to -5 deg. for longitudinal trim of the aircraft. These parts served the function of horizontal stabilizer, and were called “suspended stabilizer”.

So that was the control layout for the BOK-5 (and presumably the K-12 as built).

However the first designs had a completely different layout. I'm having trouble figuring this out.

So, some observations:

1) There are clearly a set of elevators.

2) I assume that the small horizontal surfaces above the wingtips are all-moving ailerons... is this correct?

3) The vertical surfaces on the wing tips have no markings indicating rudders... is this the case? Or would there have been rudders to allow yaw control?

4) Finally ...dotted lines (under the wing)... are they flaps? Or are the dotted lines marking an area that can be adjusted for trim? Or something else?

Any ideas? Any books I should read?
