I saw this beast on a German aviation page a few years ago.
It looks like nothing I have ever heard of. X-24 or vertical-H engine, I would guess, and an enormous installation behind the cockpit - either a supercharger with its own engine (not a turbo, see exhaust stacks) or a Russian-type auxiliary-ramjet set-up, or the radiator.
I think it's probably a mock-up - just a guess from details like the ends of the wing stubs - but of what?
The photo is also blessedly free of cultural cues to where it was designed.

Ah, OK, it's better now ;)

It was the french Sud-Est SE-580 fighter project (SE-582 for the french navy)

At first an Hispano Suiza 24 Z (2500 hp) with contraprop was foreseen. But there were too big problems with this engine and an Arsnal 24 H (from the german Jumo 213) was chosen. With the change of the engine there was a lot to change on the plane. At this time the jet fighters seemed to be the future and Sud-Est had enough works. The 580 was cancelled at first and the 582 a few later.

Two prototypes were ordered in 1944 but they were not finished when the program was cancelled at the end of 1947.
 
Are you talking about "mystery0239.jpg"?. It is the mock-up of fighter project SE580/582 with Hispano-Suiza 24Z engine (3000 hp)

So, what is the massive structure behind the cockpit for?
 
The pilot had a blind spot. It's fatal.
 
Rather OT but can anyone confirm that the Hispano-Suiza 24H and Type 82 are the same engine?

The SE580 was the last Dewoitine D.520 derivative. The intake also served to feed a turbocompressor.

we know SNCAM company,and it developed the M.580 (formally Dewoitine D.580),
it was a fighter project,led to develop the SNCASE SE.580;

Hi,

there was also SNACSE SE.581 and SE.582,the SE.582 was a naval version
Project from SE.580,with some changes,included incorporating an arrestor
hook and folded wing.

Designed around a 24-cylinder engine, the French Sud-Est SE 580 fighter was one of the last piston engine fighters constructed; the jet age would leave the project unfinished.

Yup, SE being the same company - SNCA-SE : Société Nationale de Construction d'Avions - Sud-Est (all in the name !)
