German V/STOL Fighter projects

Hi everybody.
Here a good PDF (94MB) about VFW and Focke Wulf VTOLs.
"Senkrechtstarter bei Focke Wulf und VFW“
For example it shows some early tailsitter designs, the FW-960 and the
Focke Wulf VTOL “Erdkampfflugzeuge” P.1271 – P.1278.

The Fw 860 was a project in collaboration with SNECMA AP 509. Looking at the earlier Fw tailsitter
designs and comparing them to the SNECMA tailsitter shown by Jean Cuny as a kind of alternative
to the Coleopter, I somewhat get the feeling, that co-operation between these two companies already
started eralier.
That paper is a great find indeed , thank you !

The VAK 191 B started life as the Focke-Wulf Fw 1262.

Ende 1963 wurde die Focke-Wulf FW1262 (VAK 191B) als Sieger ausgewählt. Die Konkurrenten waren
  • die Hawker P.1127 (VAK 191A),
  • die EWR EK 421 (VAK 191C) und
  • die FIAT G.95/4 (VAK 191D).

Is this version not a tail-sitter? Also, are those retractable lift engines that can also produce forward thrust?

My dear Avimimus,


it was a tail-sitter fighter,and the retractable lift engines made a forward thrust as I think.
 
So, do you think they were retractable to improve cruise efficiency (i.e. by hiding the fan from the airflow once the engines were turned off)?

In the drawing they are called "ausklappbare Hubtriebwerke" (foldout lift engines),
so I think, they were only meant for take-off/landing.

so weird,we knew Messerschmitt developed many VTOL fighters,but in associated with Shorts,that's new for me ?!,and I think it was P.1211.

Makes sense, Shorts had been under contract for the SC1 from 1954.

Not me,but you can say that to Air Pictorial,and although Shorts developed many VTOL aircraft projects by this period also ?.

VTO could be Vertical Take Off
that Landing is missing imply the aircraft would land conventional
In that case could be Tailsitter design with landing gear for runway

or rocket launch interceptor that land conventional, like that Starfighter with rocket booster in 1968...

After check,I think the most identical design was P.1211.
