Thanks Justo. I had no idea that this aircraft had a bubble canopy (I did mine based on the Mustang I ... back to Photoshop for that one! :-[).

These are Rolls-Royce projects. For a detailed account see:
Rolls-Royce and the Mustang by David Birch, Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust historical series No 9, pages 91 to 105.
Except for JM's first one the above drawings and photos and others including jet layouts are there. so is RR's original 1942 project with the Eagle engine, not based on the Mustang.
I'm not posting ten pages - if it is still available buy it and help the Trust!

Sorry. I've looked at the text, then more closely at the drawings.
The engines were not jets, but turboprops like Trent, with very prominent jet exhausts.

Thanks for identifying the book.
It seems interesting.
I just ordered it from Amazon.

i've seen the images 'escanear0003' and 'escanear0006', before, i think in Gunston's book about RR aero engines, but captioned as a mockup/prototype for an air racer.

cheers,
Robin.

What was the story behind the Mustang FTB concepts?

Regards,

Greg

The info I had points to a Rolls Royce Griffon fighter version...

Pepe

Splendid, fightingirish, thanks! I wasn't aware they'd gone as far as the full-scale mock-up stage.

While building the Unicraft FTB conversion (in 1/72), I found certain things didn't jive with what info was available. So as I'm an Air-Britain member, I was able to ask the Rolls Royce specialist who just happens to be David Birch (he's also the official Rolls Royce Historian) about some things. He was able to confirm what the overall length was as the 1/10 wind tunnel model still exists and he knew who has it. Another bit of info he gave me was that the wind tunnel tests showed that the tail surfaces were undersize and needed about 60% more area. He then told me that the plan was, if the project had proceeded to production status, the aircraft would have had a Tempest tail assemble (a complete Tempest tail assembly was issued to RR for the project). He said that he didn't know of any model of it with the Tempest tail.

But now he does know, 'cause I built one and then sent him the photos of it. He said he was quite impressed with the result.

Top pic is of the PV Fighter (Private Venture), middle photo is of the FTB Tempest tailed version, I also have it as testing the RR Crecy engine, then the bottom photo of the two together.

Engine with exhaust crankshaft-turbine augmenter?

Yes, but in hind-sight, I think the exhaust stubs should exit further back to where I have it

Hi! I saw this drawing.

So what's a P.1. engine? I can't think of which of RRs engines this could be - it looks like a 'V' but apart from the Crecy where RR working on any other 'V' projects? Most were 'X' types by late war I thought.

.....................................................

Similar in concept to the Wright Turbo-Compound engines installed in the last Lockheed Constellations: an exhaust-driven turbine drives a super-charger AND it drives the crankshaft.
Crankshaft drive might be geared, or it might be hydraulic.
The goal is to extract the maximum amount of waste energy from the (piston) engine exhaust.

Hi! Turbo compound engine include following case.
(1) Without turbocharger unit (Only power recoverly turbine)
(2) Power recoverly turbine is located before turbocharger unit
(3) Power recoverly turbine is located after turbocharger unit

Almost same concept smoke jack. Sorry for off topic.

I'll have to dig out my two RR Heritage Trust books, "Rolls Royce and the Mustang" and "Rolls Royce Crecy", and have a look again because I can't remember. But P.1 I think was one of the Crecy concept V-Twins (there were six V-12 Crecys built and tested, but IIRC, twelve of the V-Twins). Then again I could be wrong and it might be one of the previous concept engines that lead to the Crecy

I just saw an article on Key Aero about the FTB possibly being researched as possibly being a fighter aircraft powered by either Merlin and Griffon engines. Is there any credence to this, especially the Merlin version?

Hi!
FTB had same shape air intake duct as Senden by Justo-san.
