the bomb recessed into a drop tank, in turn recessed into the fuselage underside is interesting, like a Two Component Pod on a B-58 Hustler.

Now just fill that tank with napalm. . .

I've always felt that replacing the bomb component of the two-component tank with an ECM pod would've been a very low-drag way of adding ECM to an operational F-107.

Especially if it had of been used, as its winning competitor the Republic F-105 was, as a ‘Wild Weasel’ Air Defense Suppression aircraft!

Except you'd lose your ECM pod when/if you had to drop the tank. It would have been better to swap the bomb/ECM pod component with the drop tank and have the drop tank as the outer component.

Hi,

The design & production engineering phase for the F-100B received Charge Number NA-211. These early configurations are part of it.
The final configuration with the dorsal intake was NA-212.

Great finds in this thread, I always felt kind off sorry for the F-107, it never got an actual fly-off with the thud. NAA seems to have really thought the aircraft through (perhaps over thought?) and it would have come with a pretty sophisticated avionics suite from the outset (MA-12). I wonder why NAA never tried to design the Vulcan into it?

I have seen at least one three-view with an alternate gun fairing for the Vulcan (the Steve Pace X-Fighters book).

By the way, according to the Uber-107 fan, Bill Simone, the -107 was never designated "XF-107", "YF-107" or "YF-107A". The short story is that the funding was not from the "color of money" that allowed that sort of designation (the money coming from industrial readiness funds rather than RDT&E budgets). This end-run may have contributed to the demise of the F-107, politically.

I think the problem was not so much with NAA as it was with politics. Look at the NA-108 Rapier. NAA invested lots of time and energy in the program, they got FULL support from the powers that be... until the latter changed their mind about the mission and killed off the program abruptly.

Well the F107 was basically a continuation of the F100 programme, albeit to the point that it was essentially a new aircraft (hence the new designation); TAC really seems to have wanted its light bomber (F-105).

F-107 was just plain "F-107" simply because it was to be designated "F-100B" in the first place, not YF-100B.

Here is a drawing of the F-100A Interceptor. Similar to a couple of images above but the intake is more like the F-86D or F-8.

Splendid! I thought the one with the ventral fin was the NA-211? Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I got some pics lying around from 1977 Wright Patterson AFB. Enjoy. The latter is a slide I bought back then from the Museum.

Sled tests were done, ejection worked fine. Rear view wasn't great, but it had side rear view windows which probably made it superior to say an MiG-23. The intake didn't really cause this - it was the low drag flush canopy typical of early Mach 2 aircraft.
