Post-WWII Vertol Piasecki Projects

Hi,

here is an Info about Piasecki 16H-4 Panthfinder III,which was a Werstland 30-300 helicopter with
modifications,also anther attack helicopter with gunship and using a vectored thrust ducted propeller
and wing.

Thank you Vladimir,I know all Piasecki 16H variants,but that is new (16H-4).

Hi,

here is a well known Piasecki 16H-1A helicopter,but in the artist drawing there was a strange thing
behind the wing and before rear rotor,what was it ?.

There was a semi-flush engine exhaust there in the actual Pathfinder 2. Maybe at this point in the design process, they thought they would need a duct to direct the exhaust clear of the pusher fan.

Edit: Actually, you can see it in this picture of the real machine. It's an aerodynamically shaped exhaust pipe. Looks a bit shorter than in the drawing. But then so does the whole vehicle -- the drawing is pretty distorted compared to what was actually built.

the first time to know its estimated speed was 370 km/h ?.

One of Frank Piasecki's daughters worked at Sikorsky; she left when Sikorsky's engineering management (she has an MS in engineering from Yale) wouldn't let her take a leave to get an MBA at Wharton. Note that this isn't an effective method of keeping somebody out of school when her family is fairly well-to-do (her mother's maiden name was Weyerhauser, as in those Weyerhausers). Anyhow, after Mr Piasecki was ousted from Piasecki Helicopter, his new company worked on some remarkably interesting, possibly bizarre, projects.

Considering that Yale is, more or less, just across the river from Sikorsky (yeah, there's some intervening land, but they are still close), I can see why an Engineering MS from Yale would be snapped up by Sikorsky.

IIRC, one of those "interesting projects" was the X-49 adaptation of his concepts to a Sikorsky Black Hawk or Naval Hawk (I don't remember which).

I worked with her at Sikorsky and later hung out with her after she came out to Seattle to work for Boeing.

A famous story was that she brought her father, unannounced, to family day at Sikorsky. Someone there recognized him and after management was informed, he got the royal tour.

I did aero work for him in the 1980s and 1990s. He was a lot of fun, a real nice guy.

I don't think PiAC have commercially sold a single airframe since the schism in 1955? Quite remarkable that they've managed to prosper on R&D contracts.

They have had a lot of R&D contracts and... Frank Piasecki's wife's name was Vivian Weyerhaeuser Piasecki. Yes, that Weyerhaeuser.
