The Penland document collection consists of documents generated through the work of Jim A. Penland, an aeronautical engineer whose career at NACA Langley Aeronautical Laboratory/NASA Langley Research Center (including several years after retirement as a Distinguished Research Associate) spanned nearly 60 years from the late 1940s until his death in August, 2010. Penland authored or coauthored at least 41 different technical papers which covered a broad spectrum of aerospace vehicles. His career focused on hypersonic aerodynamics and wind-tunnel testing, and included such projects as the X-15 hypersonic research aircraft and the Hyper-X program. Penland participated in the design of hypersonic projects such as the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) and the X-24C which were canceled before reaching flight status. In addition to aircraft design and testing, Penland’s work included development and maintenance of several historic Langley wind tunnels, including “Project 506,” the legendary 11-Inch Hypersonic Tunnel.
A lot of interesting material, inc some handwritten notes, on a variety of topics, inc ABLV, X-24C:
