Here is a comprehensive list of U.S. Navy designations, starting with the first attempt of a standardized system in 1922 and ending in 1962, when the DoD's tri-service system was introduced and the old types still in service redesignated.

Please note that:
 • I'll be creating a new post for each letter prefix. Only the main designators (e.g. F6F) will be listed at first.
 • In a second stage, the sub-versions and variants (e.g. F6F-5K) will be added to the existing posts.
 • Pictures will be added eventually for the most obscure types.
 • Designations and company-given names which are not in bold were never officially allocated by the Navy.
There shouldn't be any omission, but one never knows... so if you see something fit to be added, please send a PM. Thanks!

One more time:

I'm not certain that the Super Tiger officially received the F12F designation but there was a draft contract and BuNos for it. See http://thanlont.blogspot.com/2008/09/is-this-grummman-f12f.html

I've never seen anything to indicate that the Navy officially designated their P-59s as F2Ls. See http://thanlont.blogspot.com/2012/01/what-was-bell-aircraft-f2l.html
Also, I doubt that the K-225 was ever designated HK. The AH was never the Phantom II; in fact, the F4H wasn't the Phantom II for a while.

Thanks Tailspin Turtle. I have applied the corrections as stated. Didn't know the whole "F2L" story, your article is very interesting...

However, I've left the HK-1 designation in the list, however, because several sources mention it, notably the U.S. Coast Guard historical website (although of course the aircraft itself carried "K-225" on the tail). See:
 • http://www.themaritimeguardians.com/coldfusion/rotary_photos_output.cfm?IDNum=109
Unknown/unofficial designations I'm still not too sure about, although I have seen them mentioned, are C2T and F16C. I have quite a number of Curtiss-related resources and they are never mentioned in them (but then they each do have a few omissions already). Also F3J is unknown to me.

Another entry that is extremely controversial was left out for now: the F5C.

A vast majority of sources state that the designation was skipped simply to avoid confusion with the old Curtiss F-5L boats, some of which were still around at the time.

Though I have no reason to doubt the validity of the argument, I have to mention here the fact that in at least two sources I found the XF5C-1 designation given as a naval version of the PW-8A (see one from 1968 attached below). I don't believe that this could simply have been made up, especially not at that time. Possibly a planned version that was cancelled with the advent of the P-1 (F6C)?

I think this needs to be considered. We can't just say "it's wrong" because most historians said so. If a valuable source should surface to contradict their theory, it would have to be reexamined. I guess our forum member memaerobilia would be best suited to dig this kind of info from his amazing Curtiss vault...

It's your list. But consider that a mistake like "HK-225" or "HK-1" for a little-known aircraft may be promulgated thoroughout the interweb and in print without question by most. On the other hand:
- Only three were bought by the Navy as a "research helicopter" (1 Oct 1950 Characteristics Summary). As we know, that usually results in the contractor's model number being used as the designation.
- The CS identifies it as a "K-225."
- The helicopters were marked K-225 throughout their service.
- I'm not aware of any other Navy helicopter with an unmodified H designation; i.e. all have a suffix, e.g. HUK, HTK, HSS, HOS, etc.

Thanks for the feedback. I too have always questioned the "HK-1" designation, but the fact that it appeared on an official Coast Guard website (and in Coast Guard-related books and documents) made it acceptable to me. Still it would be the only use of a non-modified "H" designator, as you said, so I decided to add the mention "designation subject to caution" next to it. I'll keep refining the list with time, so please bear with me! ;)

Here is what I got about the K-225.
The designation K-225 was assigned to a number of experimental helicopters with serials 125446/125447. The use of this unusual style of designations has occurred in other instances as the US Navy never had a designation for experimental aircraft.
In some reference sources the designation XHTK-1 has been used.
The designation XHTK-1G may have been applied to a single K-225 purchased by the USCG with serial 1239. The latter aircraft was delivered on 18 March 1950 and transferred to the US Navy on 22 March 1954. The reported serial 51917 does not fit in any serial listing. Some reference sources have referred to these helicopters as K-5.
It has been suggested that Kaman built a total of 11 K-225s.
In December 1951 one of the K-225s was converted with a Boeing 502 engine to become the first turbojet powered helicopter.
A single aircraft, based on the K-225 and with serial 138602, was procured as the HTK-1K drone and flew for the first time on 30 July 1957 although testing was begun in 1953. There is also photographic evidence of an aircraft with serial 129344 flying as a drone.
To make matters more complicated, the HTK-1 designation was used for a model K 240, a three seater of which 29 were procured with serials 128653/128660, 129300/129317 and 137833/137835. The first flight was on 26 April 1961 and those remaining in service on 18 September 1962 were redesignated as TH 43E. One aircraft (128657) was flown with two Boeing 502-2 turboshafts on 29 March 1954 and was redesignated as HTK-2.

Finally, the US Air Force had one YH 22, identical to the US Navy’s HTK-1. It was procured for evaluation with serial 50 1271. Some sources have suggested that the aircraft was one of the US Navy or USCG XHTK-1s (model K-225), whilst other sources suggest it was one of the US Navy’s HTK-1s (model K-240).

This is the entry I have in my records for the F5C:
The F5C designation was not assigned to avoid confusion with the F5L flying boat which was still in service. It has, however, been suggested in Flying Review International January 1969, p.60, that a single F5C was built, assigned the serial A-6690 and was lost during the ferry flight from the factory. This report further suggests the F5C was based on the PW‑8 and was fitted with a radial engine. The serial A-6690 was formally assigned to the second F4C‑1.

Early Kaman helicopter synopsis:

The K-225 was Kaman's first production helicopter. Ten or 11 were built. It had tandem seating (single front seat with a wider bench seat behind it) and no enclosure. I think the Navy bought three, with the first reportedly (Baugher) being BuNo 125446. It appears to have been the one passed on to the Coast Guard, which gave it a different serial number, first 239 and subsequently 1239. For sure there were two more, BuNos 125476 and 7 (I have pictures showing the BuNos) flown by the Navy. The turbine engine conversion was done to 125477. It was designated K-225A but not so marked.

There was a K-225 with a cabin but I don't know if it was flyable or a just a mockup. I don't know if it was one of the Navy's K-225s or one of Kaman's. However, I'm pretty sure that no K-225 was ever designated XHTK.

The HTK was "based" on the K-225. The XHTK-1, BuNo 128653, appears to have had a K-225 rotor system but it had a more powerful engine and side-by-side seating in an enclosed cabin so it was notably different in configuration and somewhat in performance. The production HTK-1s had a different rotor blade. Kaman obtained a civil certification of the HTK-1 as the K-240. The Navy bought the HTKs to 1) provide training for the somewhat different synchropter handling qualities and 2) provide Kaman with a business base while they were designing and developing the HUK/HOK.

The HTK-1K is particularly confusing. The first one (if it was designated HTK-1K) looks like a marriage of the back end of a K-225 and the unenclosed front end of an HTK, with HTK rotor blades. It was marked BuNo 138602 as Jos reported. The subsequent HTK-1K (there may have been more than one but as Jos noted, one was BuNo 129344 for sure) looked like the production HTK-1. The production HTK-1K would have dispensed with the cockpit altogether.

Wasn't the Brewster F3A simply the F4U Corsair built under license, like Goodyear's FG?

And I think the Grumman JF was called Duck just like its J2F successor.

The JF was already a Duck indeed. And yes, the F3A was to be a version of the Corsair.

Did you intentionally omit the LTA designations ZSG, ZS2G, ZPG and (possibly) ZWG?

Hi Andreas! It was not intentional actually. A simple omission. Thanks for the reminder!

This being said, the lighter-than-air designations took a while to be standardized, and have already been covered in the Goodyear topic here. I guess it's best to go and look for them there.

Wasn't a TBM a GM-built TBF? Thought the Mauler was originally a BTM (later AM).
