Greetings All -

With the references to turboprop options at the beginning of the program, these two Vought designs seem to fit best in the TS149 topic. Both specifically reference all weather and the radar on the designs makes me think these designs are for this.

The designs do seem to be somewhat reminiscent of the Grumman 128F, although that proposal had a tail dragger landing gear, which seems almost inexplicable by the mid-1950s?
 
Hmmm, yes. As TS 149 started as an Marine Skyraider replacement, I guess that it probably does belong there. I just thought 1955 was a bit early - will check some books when I get home.
 
Having read a few accounts it seems this does belong in the TS 149 topic.

Basically, 1955 saw the Navy LRO study group looking at future requirements. They foresaw more Korean style "brushfire" wars, for which a conventional, low level near-sonic all-weather attack aircraft was needed. The USMC had a requirement for a STOL Close Air Support type. Money was made available for industry studies to help formulate the concept.

It seems likely that the Vought V-406, like the early turboprop Grumman Model 128F, was part of these initial industry "concept formulation" studies.
