A photo to the latter one ,the Type 451, test aircraft. (from :Flugzeuge von A-Z).
This type was used as the basis for the jet driven S-451MM and T-451MM aircraft.
(from :World Aircraft Illustrated, J.W.Underwood, Aero Publishers, L.A, Calif. 1961)
Yugoslavia had a surprisingly prosperous aviation industry during that time !

Dragoljub Bešlin was Yugoslav aircraft constructor.

Before the war, he designed and built B-5 experimental fighter (sadly no info on that one except the remark that it ended in germany after the april war).
In 1947, using the data of the B-5, he built the 232 pionir (pioneer) aircraft, with two 60hp Walter Micron IV-II engines.
The pioneer was the precursor of the Ikarus 451 model. Although the dive capability was good, the strain on the pilot was severe due to the fact that he had to turn the whole plane around in order to see what's behind him.

There is a lot of confusion around the 451 designation because there were several experimental models with that designation.
S-451
The original aircraft, fitted with 2 Walter Minor 6-III piston engines and a prone pilot cockpit.

S-451M
(Mlazni - Jet) Derived directly from the S-451 airframe, the S-451M substituted Turboméca Palas turbojet engines for the piston engines, in underslung nacelles at the same positions on the wing and conventional cockpit.

S-451M Zolja
(Zolja - Wasp) Flown in 1954, the S-451M Zolja featured a stretched fuselage, folding wings, and engine nacelles centred on the wing chordline. Used to set a world speed record in its class in 1960.

J-451MM Stršljen
(J - Jurisnik - close support) (Stršljen - Hornet)The intended production close support version with tricycle undercarriage, Turboméca Marbore engines and cannon armament.

S-451MM Matica
(Matica - Queen bee) Two-seat trainer version, used for a world speed record in 1957.

T-451MM Stršljen II
A single seat aerobatic trainer.

A few pictures. These "yugoslav x-planes" fathered the later Galeb and Jastreb aircraft.

The Ikarus 453 was a glider, built to test the aircraft configuration for the future installment of the Turbomeca Marbord II engines. Any resemblance to the ancient animal is purely coincidental. :)

The last one was B-12 aircraft, canceled at wind tunnel model stage. Yes, we read Flash Gordon comics too. ;D

Love this guy's designs. So creative, so unusual. Very interesting.

Hi Bigvlada,

do you hear about Ikarus Model-1800 and Model-2850 ?.

I'm not familiar with those designations. If they existed, they never reached the prototype stage. I'm preparing a thread about Ikarus post-war projects (beside beslin designs). The highest number mentioned was Ikarus 920 transport plane (1 prototype built in 1951, no pictures).

Hi Bigvlada;

I know that,and also I know Model-231,Model-232 and Model-241,but I am
sure about those numbers for Ikarus, may be anther company called
Ikarus.

Hi Bigvlada :D
Looking forward to your coming thread on post-war Ikarus designs!!
I understand following Models were built/flown, either as prototype or in series.
211, 212, 213, 214, 215, 231, 252, 522

Zolja, before setting the speed record.

There were two flights of the Ikarus 453 and both ended badly, first at take off and second at landing, after a successful demonstration flight at altitude of 3000m (Ikarus 213 was the tow plane). The problem was in wing in ground effect which manifested itself during the take off and landing and the pilot (in both cases test pilot Metodije Bojkovic) wasn't briefed that this design requires a different kind of piloting than a normal plane does. After the second crash the project was abandoned although the in flight test results were promising.
The real reason behind the abandonment of the 453 was the acquisition of Republic F-84G Thunderjet. It fulfilled all the necessary requirements: it could deliver one 2000KG bomb at range of 2000km and at altitudes of 11.000m and it's speed was above 850km/h. That was one part of the solution for a problem: a fighter that can carry nuclear weapons.
The father of the Yugoslav nuclear physics was Pavle Savic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavle_Savic), who worked alongside Frederic and Irène Joliot-Curie and was nominated alongside Irene for the Nobel prize in Physics. He was the first director of the Vincha Nuclear Institute in Belgrade. Yugoslav nuclear bomb project was very leisure paced and in early years, Yugoslavia cooperated with Norway and its Vemork heavy water plant. Two other institutes who participated in the atom bomb project were the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Zagreb and Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana. Although actual reactors were years away and bomb even decades, the military wanted a small plane that can deliver the bomb using smallest airframe and engine that could acomplish the task, hence the Ikarus 453 and later the Republic F84G Thunderjet.

A chunk of popular military tv program Dozvolite (Let us) about Dragoljub Beslin and pre and post-WW2 aircraft production. On 1:36 you can see the what i believe are the models of two versions of the B-12 bomber.
