At this stage, the straightforward listing of Latécoère designations comes unstuck. The Laté 29 was a torpedo-bomber floatplane derived from the Laté 28 high-winged monoplane transport. Laté 29 derivative designations might be shown as eg: Laté 29-6 or Laté 296.
The Laté 298 follows the Laté 29 so it would be logical that the Laté 298 was the eight variant of the Laté 29. Indeed, this type is sometimes to be seen listed in modern sources as the 'Laté 29-8'.
This is inaccurate. The Laté 298 was a completely new, low-winged floatplane torpedo-bomber. Indeed, the Laté 298 was intended to be a replacement to the earlier Laté 29 series. Nevertheless. I will list the Laté 298 and landplane Laté 299 as if they numerically followed in the Laté 29-7 sequence.
From there, the numerical sequence will be continued but note dates to reveal that these projects and designs were often not chronologically sequential.
