ICAR Romanian Aircraft Designations

ICAR Întreprinderea de Constructii Aeronautice Românesti (Romanian Aeronautical Engineering Enterprise), Bucharest, 1932-1951. Below is a rough ICAR production type list.

The ICAR-1 (or ICAR-I) for licence-built Grünau-9 gliders suggests an attempt at a rational designation system by ICAR. Has anyone seen any such unifying system for ICAR aircraft?

- ICAR-Comercial: as designed, 1 x IAR (Gnome & Rhône) 7K 7-cyl radial

- Universal: single-seater (monoloc), 150 hp Sh.14a 7-cyl, 12.90 m span, x 1*

The ICAR Divizionar picture you posted (as well as the two attached below) were published in the Romanian AeroMagazin (5 July 2002).

I hope this is the correct thread to ask my question, if not, please accept my excuses.

I have purchased a photo of an aircraft where I hope that the concentrated knowledge of this forum might help to identify it correctly.



What we have here is an aircraft built by the ICAR company, you can see the logo of the company on the left of the cowling and the uniforms of the officers in the picture are most likely Romanian. The biplane in the background is probably a Fleet 10 that was also flown by the Romanians. Please compare to the logo from the book „Romanian aircraft constructions 1905 – 1974“





The gear of this aircraft is identical to that of the ICAR Universal but the cabin is like that of the Universal Biloc (two-seater) aircraft that made a long-distance flight to Capetown. The entry hatches with windows are clearly visible.



Both pictures from the book mentioned above.

But obviously the engine on my photo is different to both aircraft, the photo shows neither a Siemens engine nor the engine of the Biloc.

Now, my problem is that I couldn’t find a single evidence about an ICAR Universal with this type of engine, even the book „Romanian aircraft constructions 1905 – 1974“ doesn’t mention this type.

Is it possible with the help of the forum to find out more about this aircraft?

Any reason that you think that this is not a Universal Biloc? The transparencies on the hinged access doors are pretty distinctive.

To me the engine cowling looks like a typical Fleet 10G unit ... which means a de Havilland Gipsy Major or
IAR 4GI powerplant. The latter was the standard inline engine for the Universal Biloc.

Or were you looking for a reg and history for this particular airframe?

I don't think that the engine unit on "my" photo show the engine unit of a Fleet 10, at least not of a Romanian one.
There are several pictures of the Fleet 10 in the above mentioned book about Romanian aircraft and they show rather vertical lines on the cowling and not the diagonal lines of the engine on my photo.
Also the photos of Romanian Fleet 10 in the net show these vertical lines.


So the engine on my photo is clearly different to the Romanian Fleet 10 with the license built IAR 4-engine and also to that of the Universal Biloc with the same engine.

Since the aircraft on my photo show the access doors with window panels but a different engine my question is whether there might be a "mixed type" with hinged access doors and an engine different to an IAR-4.
Or were there pre-production (or may be later production) Universal Biloc which had a different engine? The book doesn't mention this.
Or is it possible that the Bilocs after their trip to Capetown were converted?

The Acrobatic was a license built Raab Tigerschwalbe (most probably III/IV). License rights were most probably given by Raab Flugzeugbau Gesellschaft in Riga.
