Over the years the STOVL ability of the Harrier has led to various proposals for ships for it to operate from.
First was the VT Harrier Carrier concept of the mid-1970s. 8,000 tons, c. 400ft length at WL, 420 ft flight deck with ski-jump.
Electric propulsion powered by 9x5000 hp gas turbine driven alternators and modular maintenance facilities in 'cabins'. Note VTO spot ahead of island with exhaust deflector grid and turntable at rear of flight deck.
Air group of 8 Harriers and 2 helos. 3 x twin 40mm guns. Essentially like a small Giuseppe Garibaldi/large San Giorgio.
Also shown are 3 concepts for Harrier Carriers from HSA/BAe in mid-1970s. Not serious designs, but show range of possible deck configurations. Perhaps link to Type 43 with ski-jump studies.
BAe in the 1980s proposed the SCADS concept, based on US Arapaho, to base 5 Sea Harriers plus two Sea Kings for convoy escort.
