In his book British Secret Projects: Jet Bombers since 1949, Tony Buttler mentions the various aircraft that were possibilities for the replacement for the Shackleton.

Two of those possibilities were militarised versions of the Trident and the VC-10.

Does anyone have any information on these?

From the Crowood book on the Shackleton, IIRC

Derek Wood's earlier "Project Cancelled" has far more information on Trident derivatives.

Ah, I've never seen a drawing of a MPA or bomber derivative of the VC-10 before.

I should mention that the Vanguard would have made an excellent alternative to the Nimrod, if only because the unpressurised baggage compartment might have made an excellent weapons bay without substantial structural modifications - assuming that depth was adequate.

Any piccies of the other aircraft mentioned in Smurf's post - AW681, Avro 784 and 684.

Was the VC-11 design around at the time - once the VC-10 had been considered too big it would seem a good second option given that it has 4 engines.

For AW 681 take a look here:

I hate it when that happens especially when i have seen the post before....

What stopped Vickers from offering a shortened VC-10 to meet the criticism the original aircraft was too big?

The VC-11 didn't feature a double-bubble fuselage section as deep as that of the VC-10 so it might have been less suitable for maritime patrol tasks. Also, it had a small highly-loaded wing (Boeng 727-style) which might have penalised its perfomance......

The VC-11 didn't have any commercial customers as it post-dated its competitors; the BAC 1-11 was selected for development instead......

Interesting that neither has a MAD boom.

Well, there could have been a retractable MAD boom in the fairing of the high mounted tail planes?

Chris Gibson's Nimrod's Genesis is full of concepts for Shackleton replacements, including ones based off of Tridents, and a hybrid between the BAC 1-11 and the VC.10, plus many more.
